On the drier, leeward side of the Big Island of Hawaii, some of the world’s most expensive coffee grows in the volcanic soils of the Kona Coffee Belt. This pocket-sized region – just 20 miles long and within a narrow band of elevation – experiences the perfect balance of tropical sunshine and rain to yield coffee beans of truly exceptional quality.
Even amongst the best of beans, however, different Kona coffee estates produce coffees varying in quality, taste and aromatics, depending on the unique characteristics of their soil and changing weather conditions. For this reason, Difference Coffee sources its Hawaii Kona Champion coffee beans exclusively from the winning lot of the annual Kona Coffee Cupping Competition. This guarantees that year after year, only the best coffee from the best estate in Kona ends up in your cup.

Every November, the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival celebrates the 200-year heritage of Kona coffee. The 10-day event, notable as the oldest food festival in Hawaii, honours the farmers, artisans and pioneers behind the island’s esteemed coffee industry.
Amongst the festival’s most prestigious events is the two-day-long coffee cupping competition. Only the best of Kona’s hundreds of coffee estates compete for the title. Each estate presents its 100-percent Kona coffee for blind taste tests, with only one ultimately crowned the champion. Difference Coffee exclusively purchases the winning lot of coffee beans from the champion estate. This prized lot becomes the exclusive source for our Hawaii Kona Champion coffee.
Connoisseurs have revered Kona coffee for generations. High demand alongside limited supplies of genuine Kona coffee mean this remarkable product is strictly regulated by the State of Hawaii. Only coffee grown in the district of Kona, of prime or higher grade, may be labelled as Kona coffee. It is only those very best of beans, graded by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture, that make it to the coffee cupping competition.
Many brands offer Kona blends made with as little as 10 percent genuine Kona coffee beans. In contrast, Difference Coffee’s Hawaii Kona Champion coffee is not only 100 percent genuine Kona, but the finest beans of them all according to the expert judges at the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival. This meticulous and unrivaled selection process ensures phenomenal flavour in every cup of our Hawaii Kona Champion coffee.
