Cup of Excellence

The Cup of Excellence is one of the coffee world's most prestigious competitions. It is organised by the Alliance for Coffee Excellence and known for its rigorous levels of scrutiny. Cupping evaluations overseen by industry experts take place over three weeks. Entrants are evaluated first by a national jury, then an international jury made up of experts from all over the world. To reach the final levels of the Cup of Excellence, a coffee will have been cupped at least 120 times.

In 2018, Rwanda was the first African nation to host a Cup of Excellence competition. From an initial 344 entries, 150 went through the national jury levels, with only 40 continuing to the international jury levels. In the final evaluations, just 28 lots scored a landmark 86-plus points, with Twumba Coffee the ultimate top scorer with an incredible 90.53 points.

Twumba Estate, a first-time entrant to the Cup of Excellence, sits amidst the steep mountains and valleys of western Rwanda, on the borders of Nyungwe National Forest. The estate's 100 percent Bourbon Arabica coffee is processed with natural spring water from the forest and dried naturally in the sun. Notably, coffee farming in the region is primarily the domain of women. Twumba Coffee partners with the Women's Coffee Alliance to empower women in the local community, boosting their education, health and financial security through coffee production. It's another compelling reason - along with the coffee's remarkable quality - to enjoy our Cup of Excellence Rwanda coffee.
